The University of New Mexico men's golf team signed two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent this week, announced head coach Glen Millican. James Erkenbeck, from San Diego, Calif., and Ryan Smith, from Ardmore, Okla., will be the newest additions to the Lobo men's golf squad in the fall 2008.
"I am thrilled to have both James and Ryan signing early with us," stated Millican. "I look forward to them joining our team in 2008."
Junior Golf Scoreboard ranks Erkenback 36th overall and 27th for the Class of 2008. He is also ranked 13th overall for grads west of the Mississippi. His 2007 tournament highlights include a third place finish at the San Diego Junior Golf Association Boy's Junior America's Cup, shooting 69-69-68. Erkenback also tied for a 12th place finish in the medal portion of the USGA Junior Amateur Championship qualifying for match play. He finished 8th out of 171 at the Junior World Golf Championship, posting a four-round total of 294. Erkenback also finished 4th at the FCWT University of New Mexico Open, shooting 74-73.
"As his rankings show, James has played a lot of great golf." Millican said. "He is coming off a great summer in which he had several strong finishes at major national events."
Smith sports two, top-5 finishes in the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour. He finished 19th out of 125 at the 35th Southern Junior Championship and 19th at the Texas Cup Invitational played at the University of Texas Golf Club. Smith also finished 9th in AJGA Bass Pro Shops/Payne Stewart Junior Championships, shooting a final round of 65.
"Ryan really started playing well at the end of the summer and we are looking forward to him joining the Lobos," Millican said. "He has a great work ethic and will be a great addition to our team."
