COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - University of New Mexico forward Lindsey Arndt and Colorado State guard Vanessa Espinoza were named Mountain West Conference Women's Basketball Co-Players of the Week, marking the first career award for each.
A 6-1 junior from Albuquerque, N.M. (Sandia HS), Arndt helped the Lobos to a 2-0 record last week, including a 49-46 upset over MWC-leader Utah. After being held scoreless at Utah Jan. 25, Arndt erupted for her fourth double-double of the year with 12 points and 12 rebounds vs. the Utes at The Pit. She added two assists and two blocks, and hit both free throw attempts vs. the Utes. In a 60-59 victory vs. BYU, Arndt scored 16 points, while adding eight boards and two blocks. She also converted all four free throw attempts vs. the Cougars. For the week, Arndt averaged 14 points, 10 rebounds, 2.0 blocks and 1.0 assists per game, while shooting 61.1 percent form the field (11-18).
A 5-3 sophomore from Highlands Ranch, Colo. (Douglas County HS), Espinoza helped the Rams to a pair of MWC wins last week. In a 79-65 upset over UNLV, she totaled a career-high 22 points, six assists, five steals, three rebounds and a block, while playing 39 minutes. In a 65-56 victory over San Diego State, Espinoza scored 16 points and added three rebounds, two assists and two steals. For the week, she averaged 19 points, 4.0 assists, 3.5 steals and 3.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 52.2 percent from the field (12-23), 50 percent from beyond the arc (5-10) and 81.8 percent from the free throw line (9-11).
The Lobos return to action on Thursday night at 8:30 PM (MST) against UNLV in Cox Pavilion.
