MAMARONECK, N.Y. - Madalitso Muthiya and Spencer Levin of the University of New Mexico men's golf team both won their opening round match and advanced to the round of 32 at the 104th U.S. Amateur at Winged Foot Golf Club West Course. Muthiya the 53rd seed won his opening match in 20-holes over the 12 seed Michael Thompson of Tucson, Arizona. Muthiya trailed Thompson entering the 18th hole, but won it with a par to force extra holes. The two both earned birdies on the 19th hole and then Muthiya won the 20th hole with a par. Levin the14th seed jumped out to an early three-hole lead after four holes of play over the 51st seed1Mike Lane of Curtis Heights, California. Lane would cut Levin's lead to one hole after a birdie on 14, but Levin would win 16 and 17 for a 3 and 1 win. In the round of 32, Muthiya will play the 21st seed Tyler Docking of Overland Park, Kansas at 6:40 a.m. (MST) and Levin will play the 46th seed Frank Vana Jr. of Worcester, Massachusetts at 7:40 a.m. (MST). If Muthiya wins his round of 32 match, he will play either Andy Svoboda or Robert Keller at 11:45 a.m. (MST).
