ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico women's basketball team will open the 2006-07 season on Wednesday, with an exhibition game against Vanguard University of Southern California. The Lobos are coming of a 22-10 season in 2005-06 that included a fifth straight NCAA Tournament Appearance, while the Lions come in off a 31-2 season last year and a spot in the NAIA Final Four. Tip-off is schedule for 7:00 p.m. and can be heard on 610 AM or seen live on www.golobos.com.
TONIGHT'S GAME: Tonight's game features the Lobos of the University of New Mexico against the Lions of Vanguard University of Southern California in an exhibition game.
SCOUTING THE LOBOS: The Lobos are coming off a 22-10 season in 2005-06 and return seven letterwinners, including three starters. UNM returns junior Dionne Marsh who led the team in scoring at 15.9 ppg. last season and senior Katie Montgomery who was second in the country in 3-point field goal percentage last year.
SCOUTING THE LIONS: Vanguard is coming off an impressive 31-2 season in 2005-06, where they won the Golden State Athletic Conference at 20-0 and advanced to the NAIA Final Four for the second time in the last four years. The Lions return all five starters from last season including the NAIA Player of the Year and two-time GSAC Player of the Year Kelly Schmidt who averaged 20.7 ppg last year.
THE COACHES: UNM is led by head coach Don Flanagan who enters his 12th season at New Mexico. Flanagan is 239-104 at UNM. The Lions are led by Russ Davis who enters his 11th season at Vanguard and is 258-76.
