EL PASO, Texas --- The New Mexico softball team won two games Saturday at the UTEP Invitational and improved to 8-4 on the year. The Lobos defeated Weber State 8-1 and downed San Jose State 2-0 in El Paso. New Mexico poured out 19 hits in two games and got complete game performances from Kaela DeBroeck and Samantha Gatson. The Lobos close out the tournament Sunday against Northern Colorado and UTEP. Gametracker is available on GoLobos.com.
DeBroeck improved to 3-2 on the year after giving up a run on two hits. DeBroeck threw a complete game and had four strikeouts.
The Lobos scored a run in the first, two in the second and another in the third to jump ahead 4-0. New Mexico then broke the game open with three runs in the fourth inning.
Weber State scored its only run in the top of the fifth inning.
UNM added its final run in the sixth and held on for the 8-1 victory.
In game two against San Jose State (8-5), Gatson pitched a shutout and improved to 3-0 on the year. Gatson went the distance pitching seven innings allowing six hits and striking out three.
New Mexico plated its only two runs against San Jose State in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Cassandra Kalapsa had a two RBI single in the inning. Kalapsa had two hits in the game.
Duarte and Jessica Garcia also had two hits in the game.
UNM and UNC play at 11 a.m. before a 1 p.m. showdown with tournament host UTEP. GameTracker is available on GoLobos.com.
