ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.-- The University of New Mexico volleyball team's 2011 Grass Bash is set to take place Saturday, April 23 and Sunday April 24 at South Johnson Field on the UNM campus. The annual event, which culminates the Lobos' spring training schedule, is in its fourth year and will feature 14 divisions for competition as well as a multitude of prizes for teams claiming first and second place in each division.
A small portion of the proceeds raised from the event will go toward the UNM Jeanne Fairchild Endowed Scholarship, with the remaining profits going to UNM Children's Hospital.
Last year around 150 teams competed in the Grass Bash, raising over $5,000.
"It's a great opportunity for the volleyball community to support Lobo volleyball and UNM Children's Hospital," UNM assistant coach Steve Hendricks said.
The associate director of development for UNM Children's Hospital Daniel Jaecks says the Grass Bash event is a great example of Lobo volleyball and the UNM community embracing local kids and families.
"It's a pretty awesome event," he said. "We've been partnered with the Lobo volleyball team for at least the last three years and they've continued to raise a lot of money for UNM's Children's Hospital. It's students raising money for kids, and I think it means we (the UNM community) are able to take care of our own."
The Grass Bash begins on Saturday with competition for the following divisions:
12&U girls (playing fours)
Women's A Division
Men's A Division
Men's Over 40
Women's Over 40
The action continues on Sunday with all co-ed events:
Co-Ed Doubles Open
Co-Ed Doubles A
Co-Ed Doubles B
Check-in for both days is 7-7:45 a.m.
Cost of the Grass Bash is $25 per player for adults and $20 per player for students. Each participant will receive a Grass Bash shirt and teams finishing first or second in their division will take home one of many great prizes. Some of this year's rewards include $50 off Lobo League and gift cards to Boba Tea, Jinja, Sports Authority as well as a full year membership to Albuquerque Indoor Karting.
Participants can download the Grass Bash flyer and the registration form and medical release, or they can be picked up at the volleyball offices at Johnson Center. The advanced registration deadline is 5 p.m. Monday, April 18, with registrations after that date incurring an additional $5 charge.
