Kihei, Maui, Hawai'i - University of New Mexico senior offensive tackle Jason Lenzmeier was selected to compete in the 2004 Hula Bowl Maui college all-star game the player selection committee announced last week. Lenzmeier will join Lobo defensive lineman D.J. Renteria, who was selected last month, on the Aina team roster. The Hula Bowl Maui will be held on Jan. 17 at War Memorial Stadium on the island of Maui and will be televised live on ESPN at 6 p.m. (MST).
Lenzmeier and Renteria's selection marks the first time that two Lobos have been selected to play in the Hula Bowl in the same year. The first team all-Mountain West Conference duo are also the first UNM linemen to be chosen for the game. Since 1978, five New Mexico players have competed in the 58-year history of Hula Bowl. Tailback Winslow Oliver earned game MVP honors in 1996. Deep snapper Joe Maese was the last Lobo to play in the all-star game in 2001 and was subsequently drafted by the Baltimore Ravens.
Eight Mountain West Conference players will compete in the Hula Bowl Maui, including six on the Aina team roster. Lenzmeier is one of three MWC tackles on the Aina team, joining Brendon Darby (San Diego State) and Sean Souza (Utah). Renteria, quarterback Bradlee Van Pelt (Colorado State) and tight end Ben Moa (Utah) will also compete for the Aina, while linebackers Marchello Graddy (Air Force) and Colby Bockwoldt (BYU) will play for the opposing Kai squad. Ralph Friedgen of Maryland and Jim Tressel of Ohio State will serve as the head coaches.
