The University of New Mexico women's basketball team will close the regular season Saturday afternoon in San Diego, Calif., against the Aztecs of San Diego State University. The Lobos enter the contest 20-8 on the season and 10-5 in the MWC, while the Aztecs are 12-14 overall and 5-10 in conference. Tip-off from the Cox Center is set for 1:00 PM (MST) and can be heard live on 610 AM The Sports Animal.
TONIGHT'S GAME Tonight's game features the Lobos of the University of New Mexico as they travel to San Diego, Calif., to play the Aztecs of San Diego State in a MWC game.
SCOUTING THE LOBOS New Mexico is 20-8 this season and 10-5 in the MWC with victories over Florida Atlantic (74-44), No. 25 Texas (63-60), Georgia Southern (64-43), Siena (78-39), New Mexico State (81-47 and 65-45), at Arizona (76-63), Sam Houston State (77-41), UCLA (72-63), Northern Arizona (62-51), Colorado State twice (73-42, 77-66), Air Force twice (60-46, 57-47), UNLV (77-56), San Diego State (76-46), Wyoming (50-43), Utah (73-65), BYU (80-75 OT) and TCU (75-54) and losses to No. 12/13 Arizona State (67-49), Nebraska (66-59), No. 7/8 Oklahoma (80-58), Wyoming (54-51), Utah (49-48), BYU (63-59), TCU (67-43) and UNLV (70-59). UNM is led in scoring by senior Julie Briody at 15.4 ppg and rebounding by junior Dionne Marsh at 6.5 rpg. Leading the Lobos in assists is senior Katie Montgomery at 3.4 apg.
SCOUTING THE AZTECS San Diego State is 12-14 on the year and 5-10 in the conference with wins over UC Davis, Southern Utah, Wichita state, Cal Poly, Saint Mary's, Pepperdine, Brown, Air Force, Colorado State, Utah, UNLV and Wyoming and losses to Nevada, San Diego, Utah Valley State, Georger Washington, Utah, UNLV, Wyoming, BYU twice, TCU twice, New Mexico, Air Force and Colorado State. Leading the Aztecs in scoring is Jennifer Layton at 10.6 ppg and Desiree Johnson leads them in rebounding at 6.3 rpg. Leading SDSU in assists is Quenese Davis at 5.4 apg.
THE COACHES UNM is led by head coach Don Flanagan who enters his 12th season at New Mexico. Flanagan is 259-112 at UNM. The head coach of San Diego State is Beth Burns who is in her 10th season as an Aztec and 15th overall. Burns has a record of 166-121 at SDSU and 247-186 overall.
THE SERIES This will be the second of two meetings between New Mexico and San Diego State, with the Lobos winning the first meeting 76-46 in The Pit. This will be the 34th meeting overall with UNM holding a 21-13 advantage and has a 7-6 edge in San Diego.
