SOMIS, Calif. - Senior Charlie Beljan won medalist honors for the second time this season to lead the Lobo men's golf team to a second place finish at the Club Glove Intercollegiate. New Mexico tied with Pepperdine at 40-over par (300-305-299=904) on the par-72, 6,985 yard Saticoy Country Club Course in Somis, Calif. UNM was 11 strokes back of team champion Lamar, who finished at 29-over par.
Beljan won his second tournament in as many tries, as he finished at 2-over par (71-76-71=218). Beljan trailed by one stroke entering the final round but carded a 1-under par 71 on the final 18-holes to edge Rick Romano of Houston and first round leader Jason Kokrak of Xavier by one stroke.
Other Lobo results were sophomore Nick Geyer finished in the top-10 at seventh at 8-over par (75-74-75=224), sophomore Dan Saltz moved up 16 spots to finish tied for 24th at 17-over par (79-80-74=233) and junior Robb Bierbaum (77-77-80=234) and sophomore Steve Saunders (77-78-79=234) tied for 27th at 18-over par.
The Club Glove Intercollegiate closes out the varsity portion of the fall schedule. The next tournament for the UNM varsity is the PING Arizona Intercollegiate on January 29. The Lobo JV will be in action on October 30-31 at the Herb Wimberley Invitational.
