AUSTIN, Texas - After finishing third a year ago, University of New Mexico junior Katie Coronado left no doubt, dominating the elite section A field to win the javelin this afternoon at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. Coronado added 19 inches to her own school record in the event with a mark of 171' 5" (52.25m) on her opening throw.

The defending Mountain West Conference champion was over three feet better than her nearest competitor in a field that included Texas A&M All-American Jessica Wingfield, Conference USA champion Andrea Kvetova of SMU, Mid-American champ Vanessa Roelofson of Buffalo and the top ranked javelin thrower in Division II, Abilene Christian's Linda Brivule.

Coronado became the first UNM woman to surpass 170 feet in the javelin and moved up to fourth in the national rankings. The Ruidoso, N.M. product will secure her second consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships with a top-8 finish at the NCAA West Regional meet in late May.

Elsewhere on Saturday, junior Anthony Fairbanks placed 10th in the men's section A javelin competition with a throw of 216' 9" (66.08m). Fairbanks, who threw 224' 11" in the season-opener, was hurt by fouls on each of his final three attempts.

Senior Robert Caldwell, meanwhile, finished tied for ninth in the section A pole vault. Caldwell cleared 16' 6 3/4" (5.05m) and was second among the four MWC competitors in the field.
