ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- It was an all-around team effort in the Lobos' season-opening victory over Southern on Friday afternoon at the Johnson Center.
The Lobos dominated from behind the service line, recording 21 aces and taking all three sets, 25-10, 25-9 and 25-12. Jordan Russellled UNM with four aces.
"It's always good to win the first match of the season," head coach Jeff Nelsonsaid. Since his arrival in 2007, Nelson and the 'Bos are undefeated in season-opening matches. The Lobos' last loss on opening day was a 3-0 decision at New Mexico State on Aug. 29, 2006.
"We had a match where everyone got to play and played well," he said. "We served well and our setters did a good job of distributing the ball. Elsa Krieg and Lexi Ross both had good matches and Chantale Riddledid what she's going to have to do for us every night."
Riddle led all players with nine kills and Ross added seven. Krieg was error free at the net and had five kills on six attack attempts.
Hannah Johnsontallied 21 set assists in her Lobo debut. The redshirt freshman split setting duties with Russell, who had 10 assists.
"We came ready to play today," Johnson said. "I think we have an even balance for hitters and not just one strong hitter as in years past. Jordan (Russell) and I are both comfortable setting to all of our hitters."
New Mexico held the Jaguars to nine kills.
The Sheraton Airport/LA Boxing Lobo Classic continues this evening as the Lobos take on Duquesne at 7:30 p.m.
The Dukes swept Southern earlier today by scores of 25-15, 25-14 and 25-17.
