FULLERTON, Calif. - The University of New Mexico softball team beat No. 23 Louisville, 6-5 in eight innings at the dual diamond Titan Softball Complex. The Lobos are now 1-2 after Friday's game of the Judi Garman Classic, hosted by Cal State Fullerton. New Mexico will team up against No. 2 Arizona Saturday at 7:00 p.m. MT.
The Cardinals started the bottom of the second inning with a single by Alicja Wolny through the left side. With two outs, Tori Collins singled to right field to score Wolny from second. Jordan Trimble doubled to center field to advance Collins to third base. With runners on second and third, Melissa Roth doubled to right field to score two runs for Louisville.
Down 3-0 in the top of the fourth, Lobo seniors Katie Gilmore and Erin Brandow walked to put runners on first and second. Shenise Cox pinch ran for Gilmore and scored off of a single to the second baseman by Jordyn Bledsoe.
New Mexico continued to rally back in the sixth inning off of two more walks by Louisville to put Jessica Garcia and Shaunte Duarte on base. With two outs, Castro tripled to right field to score Duarte and Sheryl Guillermo, who pinch ran for Garcia. Anderson tripled to left center to score Kerry Hodgins, who came back in to play for Castro. With Anderson on third, the Cardinals loaded the bases and walked in a run after walking Jessica Lujan-Dresslar, Cassandra Kalapsa, and Gilmore to end the inning with the Lobos up 5-3.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Louisville scored two runs to tie the game and send it to extra innings. Vanessa James singled to second base and scored off of a double by Wolny to left field. Chelsea Bemis tied the game at 5-5, hitting a single to center field.
Due to tie breaking procedures, Bledsoe was placed on second to start the eighth inning for New Mexico. Hodgins hit a sacrifice bunt to the third baseman to advance Bledsoe to third. Anderson was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and third. Lujan-Dresslar reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a fielding error by the catcher to score Bledsoe.
Kaela DeBroeck came on in relief for the Lobos to shutout the Cardinals and end the game 6-5. With the win DeBroeck improved to 5-6 on the season, and helped New Mexico improve to 10-14.
Wolny led Louisville going 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI, and a run scored. Kristen Wadwell (7-6) received the loss for the Cardinals in relief. With the loss Louisville fell to 16-10 on the season.
The Lobos have two more games left in the tournament, where they will play No. 2 Arizona on Saturday and finishes up the tournament against Fresno State on Sunday. For more information regarding live scoring go to GoLobos.com.
