ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Lobo fans came out in force Friday night as a season-high 1,339 fans showed up for Jam Johnson, but it wasn't enough to propel the New Mexico volleyball team as it fell to Utah in three games (30-19, 30-21, 30-12). New Mexico is now 3-13 (0-3 MWC) for the season, while the Utes improve to 8-6 (2-1 MWC).
Freshman Georgia Whitson (Taos, N.M.) put down a career-high 11 kills for the Lobos and junior Monica Meihack (Fallon, Nev.) recorded 21 assists. Sophomore Chelsea Sondrup (Lindon, Utah) collected seven digs and two block assists.
The Lobos could not handle the Utes at the net, as Utah pounded 52 kills on only eight errors and hit an impressive .512 for the match. Utah also racked up 13 service aces, including four by Tracy Neumeier. Three Utes reached double-digits in kills and Neumeier tallied 43 assists. Preseason Mountain West Player of the Year Kim Turner blasted 12 kills and compiled a .500 attack percentage.
New Mexico returns to action Friday, Oct. 10 at San Diego State. The Lobos continue their road trip at UNLV Saturday, Oct. 11.
