FORT WORTH, Texas --- The University of New Mexico volleyball team lost a tough five-game match to TCU, 30-23, 30-24, 24-30, 22-30, 15-12. The Lobos came out of the intermission strong, but could not put away TCU in Game Five.
It was a tale of two teams as UNM struggled in Games One and Two, then fought back in Games Three and Four to force Game Five.
The Lobos were up by four, 8-4, early in Game One. But TCU took the lead 10-9 and never let UNM get back in the game for the 30-23 win.
Game Two started with the Lobos taking a 6-4 lead, before TCU jumped ahead 17-13. UNM evened up the score at 19 on block by Anna Lehne and Rose Morris. Nirelle Hampton served TCU on an 8-0 run to a 27-19 lead. The Lobos held TCU on game point for three points, cutting the lead to 29-24 on Lehne block. A kill by TCU sealed the 30-24 win and gave the Horned Frogs at 2-0 lead going into intermission.
Out of the break, the teams played evenly to 13, before UNM took the lead on a Jeanne Fairchild kill, 14-13. Kelsi Phillips served the Lobos on a 6-0 run to build up a 24-16 lead. UNM held on to win, 30-24.
In Game Four the Lobos took the lead on a kill by Kerri Beck, 13-12. Kat Crawley continued the run, serving UNM to 17-12 lead. The Lobos built up a 28-18 lead on the serve of Fairchild and held on to win, 30-22.
The Lobos got off to a rough start in Game Five as TCU took a 5-0 lead. Fairchild put down one of her team-high 23 kills to stop the run and get UNM back on the board. UNM closed to within two on another Fairchild kill, 5-3. TCU built the lead back up to five at 12-7. After a Lobo timeout, UNM chipped away at the lead, closing to within two, 14-12, on back-to-back kills by Fairchild. But TCU won the match on a kill, 15-12.
Junior libero Gayle Tripp had 20 digs on the night to move up three places on the UNM career digs list during the match. At the end of Game Two, Tripp had nine digs to move into fourth place with 1,049. Her final dig of the match moved her into third place with 1,060 digs. She needs 54 digs to move into second place.
In addition to Fairchild's 23 kills, Lisa Meeter had 15, Rose Morris had 12, and Kerri Beck had 10. Jade Michaelsen recorded her third double-double of the season with 43 assists and 12 digs. Kelsi Phillips also chipped in with 14 digs.
The Lobos (15-8, 6-5) return home for a big Mountain West Conference weekend on Friday, Nov. 2, against BYU, followed by Utah on Saturday, Nov. 3. Both match times are set for 7 p.m. at the Johnson Center.
