The University of New Mexico men's soccer team netted an impressive 3-1 win over the Premier Development League's El Paso Patriots tonight. P.J. Wilson tallied a pair of goals as the Lobos improved to 4-0-1 in spring exhibition action.
New Mexico struck first in the match, taking advantage of a quick counter attack opportunity. After a shot by Patriot Omar Mora sailed just over the cross bar, Lobo keeper Justin Fite caught El Paso's defense off guard with a fast restart. Rising senior Jack Smithson eventually fed Wilson who scored in the 30th minute to give UNM a 1-0 lead.
New Mexico struck again in the 52nd minute after El Paso's Ezekiel Jimenez overshot a clearance by the Lobos' defense. James Urbany and Zach Tierney both made a run for UNM with Urbany taking a shot that hit the left post. Tierney kept pursuing the play and was in a perfect position for the rebound and a 2-0 lead.
Wilson put the game out of reach when his second goal gave the Lobos a 3-0 lead in the 75th minute. El Paso's lone strike came in the 80th minute on a goal from Ben Everson.
It was the first goals of the spring for both Wilson and Tierney and the first assist for Urbany. Smithson recorded his second assist of the spring in the win.
New Mexico has now outscored its spring opponents 10-2 in five matches. The Lobos will next face the Juarez Indios of the Mexican A-League in El Paso, Texas, on Sunday, April 20.
