The University of New Mexico men's basketball program will be hosting a very special evening on November 1 to help kick-start the opening of the renovated Pit and the 2010-2011 basketball season, as the winningest coach in NCAA Division I history Bobby Knight comes to town. Two-time Mountain West coach of the Year Steve Alford has produced the following letter, which we are posting here at GoLobos.com.

Hello Lobo fans! It is an exciting time of year with the Balloon Fiesta and the change of seasons. We are excited about the progress of The Pit renovations and are looking forward to the start of the season. The Pit dedication is scheduled for Monday, November 1st.

Another reason to mark your calendar for November 1 is UNM's hosting of legendary coach Bobby Knight for an evening that tips off the basketball season at the Embassy Suites Hotel. Reserved tables of 10 will go for $800 and individual seats will be $75. A portion of the proceeds will go to benefit the University libraries. Call the Lobo Basketball office at 925-5750, if you are interested in reserving a table. Individual tickets will be available at the ticket office in the Student Success Building (925-LOBO or 925-5626) and at the Bookstore ticket office on campus or you may purchase individual tickets online at UNMTickets.com. This event is open to the public, however, seats are limited. I hope you will be able to join us for a great evening with dinner and a legend.

Again, thank you for all of your efforts and my very best to you and your family.

Go Lobos, see you in The Pit

Steve Alford Head Coach

As coach Alford points out in his letter, a portion of the proceeds will benefit the University Libraries. Martha A. Bedard, Dean of the University Libraries at the University of New Mexico is grateful of coach Knight's time and his longstanding support of academics. "Coach Knight recognizes the critical role libraries play in the lives of students and faculty. We appreciate his time to help raise funds for the University Libraries here at UNM."

The Lobo basketball teams will host a grand opening and open house for the public on November 1 around their practices at a time to be announced shortly. Fans will be able to see a modern facility that still retains the charm and power of the original Pit. The Lobos will then open the building with an exhibition game on November 3 at 7 p.m. against Eastern New Mexico.
