LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 68 New Mexico men's tennis team (7-4) upset No. 59 Louisiana-Lafayette, 4-3 today in Lubbock, Texas.
The Ragin' Cajuns got off to a great start, taking the doubles point. Senior Jasmin Hodzic and sophomore Henry Gers won at No. 3 doubles 8-4. At No. 1 doubles Evghenii Corduneau and Marc Castellana downed juniors David Kowalski and Ryan Stotland 8-6. Senior Divan Coetzee and freshman Hiroud Akhavan lost at No. 2, 8-6, to Ivan Kovalev and Robin Ley.
No. 22 Coetzee took three sets to down No. 68 Corduneau, 6-0, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. Stotland came from behind for the 3-6, 7-6, 7-5 win at No. 3 singles while Akhavan netted the 6-1, 7-5 win in the fourth spot over Shaun Ellison. Gers, the only Lobo to win both his singles and doubles matches, downed Marc Castellana in the fifth spot, 6-3, 7-6. Kowalski lost at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4 and Hodzic fell in the sixth spot, 7-5, 1-6, 7-6.
The Lobos return to action tomorrow against Texas Tech at noon.
