Albuquerque, N.M. --- New Mexico women's soccer shutout West Texas A&M, 4-0, Saturday in the second exhibition match held at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos scored three second half goals to pull away with the victory and improve to 2-0 in exhibition play.
"I was pleased with their effort and attitude ," said UNM head coach Kit Vela. "We were fatigued but got our legs back in the second half and played much better. We gained a lot of experience in both these games but we still have a lot of work to do. We look forward to another strong week of training and hosting Texas Friday."
Albuquerque native Katie McKernan scored the first goal of the game in the opening period on an assist from fellow Lobo freshman Alexis Ball. Mckernan avoided the defender and found an open net for the goal.
UNM added three more goals in the second period to cruise to the victory. Freshman Kate Wyrick scored the second goal midway thru the second half on assists from senior Anna Neu and sophomore Markee Nobriga.
Minutes later, Nobriga wasted little time before scoring the third goal. Nobriga took the pass from Wyrick and found the net. Neu was also credited with an assist on the pass to Wyrick.
The final goal of the day was in the last minute of play. Ball fired a rebounded shot from freshman Stephanie Lowery into the back of the net.
UNM concludes the weekend with back-to-back shutouts over New Mexico Highlands, 2-0, and West Texas A&M, 4-0. The Lobos return to action on Aug. 24 against the nationally-ranked Texas Longhorns. The match will be the final tune up for the regular-season and will be played inside the UNM Soccer Complex at 3 p.m. For more information about UNM athletics visit www.GoLobos.com.
