ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.--Sophomore Jennifer Williams netted her eighth goal of the season in a 3-1 victory over the Northern Colorado Bears tonight at the UNM Soccer Complex. Williams needed only three minutes and 55 seconds to convert New Mexico's first goal of the match. Playing their third match in six days the Lobos improve to 8-0-2 on the season and have matched the most wins in a season under head coach Kit Vela. Northern Colorado falls to 3-4-1 on the season.
"I thought we had some really great moments," said Vela. "We made a lot of changes out there and we tried to get a lot of players on the field. Being at home again some kids were too amped up and some kids weren't amped up enough. Overall not a bad effort from our team."
The Lobos have reached the eight-win mark in each of the past four seasons. Last season the Lobos hit the eight-win mark in the last match of the regular season at UNLV. Tonight, only 10 matches in and nine remaining the Lobos have a shot at getting that elusive ninth win for coach Vela.
Williams was in the right place at the right time as sophomore Nicole Reed headed fellow sophomore's Jael Fanning cross towards the goal. Williams picked up the ball on its first bounce and put away a right-footed strike to make the score, 1-0. Williams eighth goal on the season gives her sole possession of sixth place all-time at UNM for goals in a season. Williams now has 21 total points on the season and puts her in fifth place all-time at UNM for points in a season.
Williams also moved up the career record book at UNM. The goal was the 12th of her career and puts her in a tie for sixth place all-time for goals in a career.
Reed and Fanning picked up their fourth and third assists respectively.
A pair of Lobos netted their first career goals tonight. Junior Elizabeth Lambert blasted a ball from 20-yards out off the right flank into the back of the net in the 21st minute. Williams and senior Jess Quador were credited with assists. The assist was Williams fifth of the season and Quador's second.
True freshman Shelbie Luna put away a header after senior Veronika Strnadova's shot bounced off the keepers hands and up into the air. Luna was standing right next to the Northern Colorado keeper and was able to get her head on it and put the ball into the net in the 79th minute.
The Lobo defense shut down the Northern Colorado offense allowing only one shot in the first half. The Bears were able to close the shooting margin to 10-8 in the second half but were outshot 20-9 in the match.
Redshirt freshman Kelli Cornell picked up her eighth win of the season and is now tied for fifth place all-time at UNM for wins in a season.
The Lobos will host the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks on Friday at 7 p.m. MT. For more information visit www.GoLobos.com.
