The University of New Mexico men's basketball team was picked to finish seventh in the 2003-04 Mountain West Conference standings, the league announced from Denver today where its annual Media Day is being held. Voting was conducted by media that cover the league.

BYU was a slight favorite to capture the title. The Cougars received 13 first-place votes and 144 total points. Utah was a close second, getting 138 points and six first-place votes. MWC Tournament champion Colorado State was third, followed by UNLV, Wyoming, San Diego State, UNM and Air Force.

The Lobos were also picked to finish seventh in the league last year, which they did with a 4-10 record. UNM was 10-18 in all games a season ago, the school's first losing season in 20 years.

New Mexico returns just six lettermen from last year's team and it lost the nation's leading scorer in Ruben Douglas. Nine new faces dot the roster for the upcoming season, which begins next week with a foreign tour to Canada. The Lobos will play four games in three days Oct. 16-18, in Vancouver, B.C.

The first home exhibition game is Nov. 8 against the Basketball Travelers. The regular season gets underway on Nov. 22 against San Francisco State.
