COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.--- New Mexico sophomore goalkeeper Kelli Cornell has been named Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week as announced today. It is the first conference award for the Lobos this season and the fourth of Cornell's career. She received the honor three times as a freshman.
Hailing from San Clemente, Calif., Cornell produced a shutout against No. 23 Marquette on Sunday afternoon, helping New Mexico secure the Milwaukee Cup Tournament title with a 1-0 overtime victory over the Golden Eagles. Cornell faced 19 shots on the day and finished with 12 saves through 98 minutes of action. Cornell faced 15 shots and allowed one goal during Friday's 1-1 double-overtime tie against Wisconsin-Milwaukee. With a combined 15 saves over two matches, the sophomore goalkeeper earned Milwaukee Cup Most Valuable Player honors.
The Lobos return to action Friday, Sept. 3 when they host New Mexico State in the Rio Grande Rivalry at 7 p.m. at the UNM Soccer Complex.
