STARKVILLE, Miss. --- University of New Mexico senior Brian Cavazos-Galvez has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason All-America Third Team as announced today by the national office. It is the second preseason honor the outfielder from Albuquerque as received in the past month.
"We've known all along what Brian is capable of," said Lobo head coach Ray Birmingham. "It is great to see the rest of the nation recognizing his skills and the positive direction that our program is headed in. We hope to see this trend of national recognition continue in the coming seasons."
Cavazos-Galvez, an all-Mountain West Conference first team selection in 2008, was recently named to the Brooks Wallace National Player of the Year Award Watch List along with teammate Rafael Neda. The Manzano High School graduate led the Lobos last season with a .367 batting average, 11 home runs, 55 RBI, and a .633 slugging percentage. He also was one of the toughest players to strikeout with only 10 in 210 at bats.
Prior to his arrival at UNM, Cavazos-Galvez was a two-time all-America selection at New Mexico Junior College under Birmingham's tutelage. As a sophomore, he led the Thunderbirds to an NJCAA national runner-up finish in Grand Junction, hitting .480 with 22 doubles and 11 home runs. As a freshman, he hit .517 with nine home runs and 66 RBI.
The Lobos begin 2009 action on Friday, Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. when they host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at Isotopes Park.
