Lobos Take First Game From No. 17 Utah, But Fall In Four

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The New Mexico volleyball team claimed the first game against Mountain West Conference-leader and 17th-ranked Utah in thrilling fashion, 34-32, but the Utes rallied back to win the match in four games Friday night at Crimson Court on the Utah campus. The Lobos return to action Saturday night to face BYU in Provo at 7 p.m. Live stats of the match will be available at www.BYUCougars.com.

The Lobos (7-14, 1-9 Mountain West), who nearly upset the Utes Oct. 2 in the Johnson Center after taking them to five games, again jumped out in front in Salt Lake City. UNM pounded 17 kills in winning the first game, 34-32.

Unfortunately for the Lobos, the Utes (17-3, 9-0 MWC) bounced back from the game one loss, and were victorious in the next three games. Utah won game two, 30-18, game three, 30-23, and game four, 30-17.

Senior Monica Meihack produced her fourth double-double of the season by dishing out 35 assists and collecting 10 digs. Junior Nicole Ryan was one dig shy of her second double-double of the season, producing 11 kills and nine digs. Freshman Samie Weber also put down 11 kills to go along with six blocks, upping her team-high total to 98 for the season. Defensively, senior Adah Burke dug a match-high 21.

The Lobos had a block party against Utah in their first meeting, collecting a school-record 43 block assists and a season-high 22.5 team blocks. This time around, the Ute front line outblocked the Lobos, 14 to 6.5. Amie Toone registered a match-high seven blocks for Utah, while Lyndsey Henderson and Danielle Leichlieter each had 15 kills.
