COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - Senior Melissa Forest of the New Mexico women's basketball team was selected Mountain West Conference Player of the Week named by the league officials on Monday, morning, marking her first career award.
A 6-2 senior from Hobbs, N.M. (Hobbs), Forest led the Lobos to a 70-66 upset of UNLV before a sellout crowd of 18,018 at The Pit in Albuquerque on Saturday. She tied a career-high with 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds vs. UNLV, which entered the game unbeaten in MWC play. With 3.1 seconds remaining in the game and a two-point UNM lead, Forest had a key steal to prevent a UNLV scoring opportunity, and after being fouled, hit two free throws to seal the victory over the Lady Rebels. In a win over San Diego State, Forest collected 11 points and six rebounds. In two games last week, Forest nearly doubled her season scoring average (8.1 points per game) with 15.5 points per contest, while shooting 54.5 percent from the field (12-of-22). She also averaged 7.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.0 blocks per game last week. The Lobos have now won 15 straight vs. MWC opponents at The Pit.
