ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The 2003 University of New Mexico football season officially got underway this afternoon with the local media day, followed by the first practice of the fall. Click below for a complete practice schedule and to read what quarterback Casey Kelly, running back DonTrell Moore, defensive lineman D.J. Renteria and offensive guard Claude Terrell had to say about the upcoming season.
Check back to GoLobos.com for preseason practice updates and photos, beginning on Thursday, Aug. 14. Quotes from head coach Rocky Long and several players will be posted every Tuesday afternoon, beginning Aug. 26, following the weekly football media luncheon.
SENIOR QB Casey Kelly (on being established as the starter at the beginning of the year): "I think the coaches are going to play whoever is the best, and whoever gives the team the best chance to win. I feel fortunate that I'm in that position right now, but I don't take that for granted. I try to go out there every day and do my best and improve and try and help this team win. I have a responsibility to do that."
(on the state of the UNM offense): "We've got experience coming back in the backfield - even though they are young - and that's always a positive. We have a good senior corps of wide receivers and some young talent as well, and our offensive line is real solid as well. With that, I think we have some pretty potent weapons and now it's up to us to make plays and come together as an offense and produce."
SOPHOMORE RB DonTrell Moore (on improving upon his stellar freshman season): "I'm looking at being whatever offensive weapon my team needs me to be, and that's the way the whole running back committee has been working all summer; preparing ourselves to take on whatever role the offense asks of us."
(on how the UNM offense might change this season): "I see it changing because we've got to throw it deep. We've to get our receivers way more involved and make a conscious effort to do that. The more deep threats we have will open up all aspects of our game and that's essentially where we are trying to get to."
SENIOR DE/NT D.J. Renteria (on moving from defensive end to nose tackle in certain defensive sets): "It's only in certain packages, but I'm a versatile athlete and I hold that as being very important. I think it's just going to help the team out, which is what coach (Osia) Lewis has expressed so far."
(on the importance of shutting teams down early): "Last year, from the defensive aspect, the first three or four games we were horrible. We weren't getting our assignments done, focusing how we should have been and it showed. People were beating us, people would come in here and beat us, so it's going to be very important to start the year fast and set the tone for the rest of the year."
JUNIOR OG Claude Terrell (on what the offensive line means to the success of the team): "The offensive line is the most important part of the team. So we put a lot of responsibility on ourselves to come out and do the best job possible. The offense can't be productive without us up front. When it's time to play the game, we need to give (quarterback) Casey (Kelly) time to throw the ball, and DonTrell (Moore) and the other running backs holes to run through."
(on returning many of last year's offensive starters): "With us having all 11 starters back from last season, that gives us a good feel for each other. We've worked together and been in the fire together. If we can start fast and finish fast then we'll have a pretty good year."
