COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The 34th-ranked University of New Mexico men's tennis team continued to roll, picking up a 5-2 in over No. 65 UNLV this afternoon to improve to 15-2 and 2-0 in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos have notched seven consecutive matches.
In usual form, UNM solidified the doubles point, winning three straight matches. The Lobos are anchored by seniors Johnny Parkes and Miles Bubgy at the No. 1 position. The duo picked up their sixth straight win with an 8-5 victory over UNLV's Elliot Wronski and Luca Barlocchi, who are ranked 75th in the nation. At No. 2, Graeme Kassautzki and Joe Wood defeated Attila Toth and Nikolaj Wullf, 8-5, while freshmen Ben Dunbar and Elliot Chang went 8-5 over Wesley Burrows and Mehdi Bouras. Kassautzki and Wood and Dunbar and Chang have each won eight of their last 10 doubles matches.
Parkes downed Wronski at the No.1 position in singles as well to improve to 16-1 in the spring season. After securing the first set 6-3, Wronski made Parkes work for the second set, pushing it to a tiebreaker that Parkes would eventually win 7-5 for a 7-6 second set victory.
Miles Bugby fought back at the No. 3 singles spot for his 11th victory of the spring. Bugby followed in the same fashion as Parkes, taking the first set over Bouras 6-3, however, he would drop the second set in tiebreaker. Bugby then came back for a 6-3 thrid set.
The Lobos are back in action on Sunday, April 5, meeting up with No. 23 Boise State in Boise, Idaho. Match time is set for 12 p.m. MST.
