The University of New Mexico men's soccer team scored a 3-1 win over Hartick in the final day of the Westfield Insurance Cup in Akron, Ohio, today. The Lobos got goals from juniors Chris Wright and Mike Porter and sophomore P.J. Wilson in the win to even their record at 1-1-0 on the year.
New Mexico went down 1-0 early in the match with the Hawks (1-1-0) when John Paul Boyle scored on a cross from Barry Pearson in the ninth minute. The Lobos bounced back five minutes later when they earned one of their six corners. Senior Diego Barrera sent a cross to the far post where sophomore Justin Davis was waiting. Davis headed the ball back to the middle where Wright was waiting to score his first goal of the season and the 10th of his career.
UNM struck again in the 22nd minute when Barrera chipped a pass to Porter over the Hawk defense. Porter went near post for his first goal of the season and the eventual game-winner.
UNM added an insurance goal the 33rd minute when senior Blake Danaher fed Wilson on a give-and-go on the right side. It was also Wilson's first goal of the season and the second assist for Danaher on the weekend. New Mexico outshot Hartwick 13-6 in the match and UNM had more corners than the Hawks (6-4).
"I was pleased to see us bounce back like we did after a tough loss on Friday," stated UNM head coach Jeremy Fishbein. "We got down early again, but we showed some heart putting up three goals in the first half. That allowed us to let a lot of guys see some time on the field."
New Mexico will now turn its attention to its home opener on Friday, Sept. 7, against Loyola Marymount in the TLC Plumbing & Utility Invitational. The Lobos kick off against the Lions (0-1-0) at 7:00 p.m. (M.D.T.) at the UNM Soccer Complex. Action begins with Central Florida taking on Cincinnati at 2:30 p.m., followed by the Lobo women facing Long Island University at 5:00 p.m.
