New Mexico head coach Steve Alford:

"There is going to be games like this. The college basketball season is very long. I tried telling our guys that at half time. I told them that again at the end of the game. We have been banged up a bit just with some illness that went through us and we kind of played that way. I really liked what the guys did defensively. We talked about that at half time...I don't think there will be too many nights we go 3-for-24 from behind the three, but when that does happen and you can still win the game, that's the most important thing. I think that what we did defensively is what I am most pleased with. We still had a lot of breakdowns, but to hold a team to 21 percent shooting and 48 points, and out-rebound them, and only turn the ball over 11 times, I thought our guys did enough defensively to get the win."

"I thought J.R. (Giddens) really matured defensively tonight and I thought that really helped us more than anything... He's got to do things within the framework of the team. I think through seven games J.R. has really done a tremendous job of that. His game is getting a lot more well-rounded and he is that talented. I thought he did a tremendous job of guarding tonight."

"I thought offensively we never really got into a big flow other than the run we had in the second half that really keyed us, but that run was keyed because we got four or five stops in a row. I thought our defense really carried us tonight. I would much rather have nights where the offense looked like it did tonight and we win, than to have a bad night defensively. You have a bad night defensively and you can get ran out pretty easily. If we wouldn't have guarded tonight, this would not have been a win."

Southern Utah head coach Roger Reid:

"I am very pleased with the progress we are making. We played a nice team in a hostel environment and like I keep telling the guys, we're getting ready for league, that's what I said from day one that's why we play the schedule we play, to learn how to be a good basketball team against good people. I am just really proud of the young men. They came in here with confidence and came to play a good game. This team has been beating people by 29 points. I have great respect for Steve Alford. He is a great coach and he is going to have a great program here. That being said we are going to have a nice program and our team is just going to get better."

"We held them to 38 pts and they have been shooting over 50 something. Our guys did a great job against the 3pt shot, they have been shooting over 50%, half their baskets have been 3pt shots, our guys did a nice job of guarding against it."

"Going down the wire we lost our composure just a little bit on some execution where we didn't get the shot and that is where we have to improve. In a ball game on the road, that is where you have to be your best going down the wire in a close game and we kind of self destructed a little bit, but we are getting better at that and when it counts we will be executing like we like."

"It was fun for our players to be in this environment, you learn a lot by being in this setting. The whole thing once again is to try like I said from day one is to make this team better and believe in what you are doing."
