Final Stats

The 22nd-ranked University of New Mexico Lobos scored two goals in the final three minutes of tonight's game at Air Force to secure a 2-0 win. New Mexico outshot the Falcons (4-12-1, 2-7-0 MPSF) 22-6 but could not break through for the first 87 minutes. The game was not decided until sophomore Justin Davis header in the game winner in the 88th minute. With the win, New Mexico improves to 12-4-1 on the season and in first place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation at 7-1-1.

New Mexico, who had beaten AFA 6-0 earlier in the year, was trying to avoid a let down, but allowed the Falcons to stay in the match until the final minutes. Lobo freshman Michael Reed started the game-winning play with a free kick that found junior Chris Wright at the far post. Wright headed the ball to the front of the net where Davis laid out in between two defenders and placed a header by Air Force goalie Brian Guyette for his fifth goal of the season. Wright added his fourth assist and MPSF-leading 28th point of the season on the play. It was the second assist in as many games for Reed.

The Lobos added an insurance goal just 24 seconds later when sophomore P.J. Wilson found himself on a 2-on-1 situation with teammate freshman Dominique Romero. Romero fed Wilson for shot that beat Guyette from 10 yards out for his fifth goal of the campaign and the first career assist for Romero.

UNM goalie Mike Graczyk was forced to save only one shot on his way to his school record 29th career shutout. He stopped a rocket from 25 yards out by Falcon sophomore Kevin Rosser midway through the first half. UNM forced Guyette to make eight saves in the match and held a 9-4 advantage in corner kicks.

The Lobos' win, coupled with a 1-0 victory by Denver (10-4-3, 6-1-2 MPSF) over UNLV earlier in the day, sets up a showdown on Sunday between New Mexico and the Pioneers. The winner of that match will take the MPSF title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
