TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 13 Arizona State women's soccer team (6-1-1) kept their unbeaten home record in tact with a 2-0 win over the New Mexico Lobos (1-5-2) on Saturday night. It was the Sun Devils' third consecutive shutout.
Brittany Cooper got her team-leading sixth goal of the year for the Sun Devils and Elizabeth Bogus notched her fourth. Patrice Feulner assisted both goals.
Cooper, a native of Albuquerque, put the Sun Devils on the board in the 11th minute. Feulner sent a looping cross to the far post of New Mexico keeper Kristen Winters' goal, where Cooper was waiting to head in the ball.
Bogus added ASU's final goal 21 seconds into the second period. Feulner found Bogus 30 yards from the Lobos' goal. Bogus broke away from the UNM defense, firing in her shot to the left of Winters.
New Mexico held their own against the Sun Devils, a very organized and athletic team, for a majority of the game. Both ASU goals came off of mistakes by the young Lobos, not by shots the Sun Devils created.
New Mexico head coach Kit Vela was very pleased with the Lobos showing however. The Lobos played very well at times and had some good opportunities but could not capitalize, partly due to their youth and inexperience.
Arizona State dictated the pace of the game for long stretches. They outshot New Mexico 16-6 on the evening. Junior midfielder Rachael Addison attempted five of the Lobos' six shots. Junior goalkeeper Kristen Winters made seven saves on the evening.
The Lobos continue the season Oct. 5 at Saint Mary's in California. Kickoff is slated for noon P.D.T.
