The University of New Mexico women's soccer team saw its entire back line named the recipient of the TopDrawerSoccer.com Players of the Week. The four members of the back line, Roxie McFarland, Lauren Irwin, Liz Nare and Brooke Ellison, are being recognized for the Lobos' two shutout wins against Utah and No. 8 BYU last week. This is the first time four players have shared the award.
New Mexico also appeared at No. 28 on the Top Drawer.com's projection of the 64-team NCAA tournament field, including all automatic conference and at-large bids to the field. The Lobos' defense has limited their opponents to only four goals in 14 games this season.
The Mountain West Conference announced Kelli Cornell as its Defensive Player-of-the-Week Monday. It is the second time she's received the award this season and fifth time as a Lobo. Cornell was also named a College Soccer 360 Primetime Performer of the Week, for the second time this season.
Hailing from San Clemente, Calif., Cornell recorded a pair of shutouts to help No. 25 New Mexico to victories over Utah and No. 8/11 BYU on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Over 192:22 minutes of action, Cornell recorded 13 saves on 28 shot attempts. She is currently in second place on the Lobos' all-time career shutout list as well as carrer wins as a goalkeeper. Cornell leads the MWC in goals against average, save percentage, shutouts and shutouts per game.
The Lobo squad hits the road for their final three conference matchups before the MWC tournament in San Diego, Calif. Nov. 4-7. The Lobos will play at Air Force this Friday, Oct. 22 at 4:30 p.m. and Wyoming on Oct. 24 at 1 p.m.
