ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- New Mexico softball head coach Kim Newbern and the Lobo softball program have signed three student-athletes for the 2007 season. The players include Katie Gilmore (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Sara Loeffelholz (Omaha, Neb.) and Tori Rogers (Overland Park, Kan.).
Newbern, who is entering her fourth season in 2006 as the Lobos' head coach, is thrilled with the amount of talent the three signees will bring to the up-and-coming program.
"We are very excited to add such a talented group of athletes to the University of New Mexico softball team," said Newbern. "All three come from excellent teams that are very competitive. I look forward for all three young ladies to make an immediate impact to our team, not only with their softball skills, but with their leadership and academic success as well. We are very fortunate that they chose UNM and we look forward to them helping us take it to the next level."
Katie Gilmore IF Scottsdale, Ariz. (Horizon HS)
Gilmore holds the team record at Horizon High School for fewest strikeouts in a season (2 in 110 AB) and is tied for most hits in a single season with 45...hit .498 as a junior and had an impressive .965 fielding percentage...named to the all-state first team as a sophomore and a junior...a three-year all-region player...named to the all-valley first team as a sophomore and a junior...was a 2005 Who's Who in High School Sports...named 2004 varsity MVP at Horizon and a 2003 team MVP...a three-year AIA Scholar Athlete Award winner...plays for the summer team Arizona Lil' Saints.
Sara Loeffelholz IF Omaha, Neb. (Marian HS)
Loeffelholz swung one of the most productive bats in the state in 2005, hitting .509 with 49 RBI, 26 runs scored, 10 doubles, 11 triples and five homeruns...holds Class A state records for RBI in a season and in a game...also tied state record for triples in a season...named to the all-state first team in 2004 and 2005...made the super-state first team in 2005 and the second team in 2004...named to the all-metro conference team in 2004 and 2005...named to the first team all-Nebraska in 2005...was a 2002 and 2003 all-state Class A honorable mention...made the all-division team in 2002...was named high school MVP in 2004 and 2005...plays for the summer team Omaha Finesse.
Tori Rogers P Overland Park, Kan. (Blue Valley West HS)
Rogers was impressive on the mound in 2005, holding a record of 17-1 with 113 strikeouts and a .59 ERA...showed talent at the plate as well, hitting .453 with 26 RBI in 2005...holds high school records in batting average, doubles, triples, RBI, strikeouts thrown and ERA...named to the all-state first team in 2005...an all-metro first team player in 2005...named to the all-star first team in 2005...named all-sun second team in 2003 and 2004...a three-time Scholar Athlete honoree...plays for the summer team Kansas City Xtreme.
