COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Senior first baseman Katie Gilmore and sophomore pitcher Samantha Gatson were named the Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. This is the second award for Gilmore and the first award for Gatson. Gilmore hit .500 on the weekend, while Gatson recorded her second shutout of the season and went 2-0 on the weekend.
Gilmore hit .500 (11-for-22) with six runs scored, four RBIs, two doubles, and one home run during the UTEP Invitational in El Paso, Texas. Gilmore went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and three stolen bases in a 12-5 win over Northern Colorado to open the tournament. In the second game the senior went 2-for-3 hitting in a run and stealing a base in a 6-5 loss to San Jose State. In the second day of the tournament, Gilmore went a combined 2-for-5 with one double and two runs scored in the Lobos wins over Weber State and San Jose State. In the final day of the tournament, the senior went 4-for-9 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored vs. Northern Colorado and UTEP.
Gatson went 2-0 in four appearances last week at the UTEP Invitational. In 16.2 innings on the mound she struck out 10 batters, while giving up 11 hits (all singles), four walks and five runs for a 2.10 earned run average. In New Mexico's 12-5 win over Northern Colorado, the senior came on in relief to post her first win of the week. In 5.1 innings of work she gave up just one hit and no runs, while striking out four. In her only start of the week against San Jose State, she threw a complete-game shutout, striking out three and scattering six hits in UNM's 2-0 win. In the final day of the tournament, Gatson came on in relief in both games vs. Northern Colorado and UTEP giving up four hits, while striking out three batters.
The Lobos will take the field Friday and Saturday in a four-game home stand against Baylor. The four-game series begins with a doubleheader Friday at 3:00 p.m. and concludes with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 11:00 a.m. MT.
