New Mexico jumper Deanna Young punched her ticket to the NCAA Regional Championship with a second place leap of 20" 6 ¼" (6.25m) at the UTEP Springtime Invitational on Saturday. In her season debut, Young was almost one full foot above the 19' 8 ¼" regional qualifying mark. Young crushed her previous personal best mark of 18' 0 ½" by over two feet and was only five inches from breaking the New Mexico school record.
In the high jump Sandy Fortner also brought home the silver with a new personal best jump of 5' 7". Fortner's previous collegiate best was 5' 6".
It was a coming out party of sorts for the freshman competing. Matt Everett brought home a third place finish in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:10.14 in his first collegiate race of his career. Kyle Walker cleared 16' 00 ¾" for a third place finish in the pole vault. Asal Salehpoor finished fourth out of the field of 19 in the long jump with a leap of 18' 8 ½".
