Designated hitter Cynthia Verhuist belted a 3-run homer in the fourth to give Wichita State an 8-6 victory over New Mexico in the opening day of the Lobo Invitational. WSU improves to 6-5 while the Lobos drop to 4-4 entering this evening's game against Texas Tech.
While it was a slugfest early, neither team scored after the fourth inning.
WSU reliever Ashley Bright shut down UNM by allowing just one hit over the last four innings.
Katie McGeeney led off the game with a home run to right and Wichita State scored a pair of unearned runs off Lobo starter Kelly Ninemire to make it 3-0. Ninemire got just five outs before giving way to Nelson in the second.
UNM cut it to 3-2 in the home half of the first on a two-run triple by freshman Gabriella Parra, but WSU got a run back in the second on an RBI single by Kara L'Huillier.
Third baseman Ashley Allen led off the Lobo second with a single to right. Catcher Erin Brandow walked and center fielder Samantha Hughes singled to short, loading the bases for Machac. The freshman from Albuquerque Sandia ripped a shot to left field in just her second collegiate at-bat as the Lobos got their first lead of the game at 6-4.
Machac went 2-for-4 and scored two runs.
Right fielder Kiersten Dixon led off the fourth with a home run to trim the Lobo lead to 6-5. A walk to McGeeney and a force out set the stage for Verhuist.
