ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Senior Anna Reines (Big Lake, Minn.) totaled 13 kills in the last home match of her career, but it wasn't enough as San Diego State topped the New Mexico volleyball team in three games (30-26, 30-22, 30-23) Saturday night (Nov. 8) at Johnson Arena. UNM now stands at 4-22 (1-11 Mountain West) for the season, while San Diego State improves to 17-11 (7-5 MWC).
Reines led all Lobos with 15 points to go along with her 13 kills. She hit .269 (13K-6E-26TA) for the match with three digs, two block assists and a service ace. Monica Meihack (Jr., Fallon, Nev.) tallied 34 assists with five digs, Adah Burke (So., Las Cruces, N.M.) collected 10 digs and Chelsea Sondrup (So., Lindon, Utah) put down nine kills with six digs. Kelly Therkelsen (Fr., Eagan, Minn.) registered four blocks (one solo, three assists) to lead the Lobos at the net while Georgia Whitson (Fr., Taos, N.M.) had six kills and two blocks.
The Aztecs were led by Megan Schauerman, who collected 13 kills and hit .476 for the match. Sara Engstrom paced SDSU with 32 assists and Aspen McPartland delivered seven blocks.
San Diego State used eight team blocks in the first game, including four each from Melissa Cansdale and Schauerman, to win 30-26. Reines had six kills in the first game for UNM.
The Lobos only hit .083 in the second game as SDSU went up 2-0 with a 30-22 win. Heasty hit .600 in the game and tallied three kills and one block assist for the Lobos.
Reines put up strong numbers in the third game, putting down four kills with a block assist while hitting at a .444 clip, but the Aztecs were too much as they went on for the sweep with a 30-23 win.
New Mexico heads to the road next weekend for matches at Wyoming Nov. 14 and Colorado State Nov. 15. Both matches are set to begin at 7 p.m.
