COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. --- The University of New Mexico baseball team earned the No. 2 seed in the 2009 Conoco Mountain West Conference Tournament with a 19-6 win over Air Force today at Falcon Field. New Mexico finishes the regular season 37-18 overall and 15-8 for second place in Mountain West Conference action. Air Force finishes the season 14-37 and 3-18 in MWC play.
The 2009 Lobos' 37 wins tie the 1968 and 1979 teams for third place on the New Mexico all-time wins list. It is the most wins by a UNM baseball team since 1985 when the Lobos won a program best 42 games.
Senior right fielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez had one of the best days of his Lobo career, going 5-for-5 with six runs and four RBI on a double, three home runs and an intentional walk.
The Lobos took a 5-0 lead through the first three innings, including two runs by Cavazos-Galvez, before Air Force got on the board, 5-2.
The teams traded runs in the fourth, 6-3. Cavazos-Galvez hit the first of his three home runs to lead off the fifth, followed by a Daniel Gonzalez single that scored Justin Howard, 8-3. Air Force cut the lead to 8-6 in the bottom of the fifth.
The Lobos scored 11 runs over the final three innings for the 19-6 final.
Six other Lobos, in addition to Cavazos-Galvez, had multi-hit games. Gonzalez was 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBI, while Mike Brownstein, Max Willett and Howard had three hits each. Ryan Honeycutt and Kevin Atkinson had two each.
With the No. 2 seed in the Conoco MWC Tournament, the Lobos earn a first round bye and will play the highest seeded winner of Tuesday's first round games on Wednesday, May 20 at 2 p.m. (MDT) at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth, Texas. All tournament games will be telecast on The Mtn. with Wednesday's and Thursday's games also on CBS College Sports.
