Lobo Track & Field Recognized With National Academic Honors

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --- The University of New Mexico men's and women's track & field teams were recently acknowledged by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association with national academic honors for teams and individuals in 2010. The Lobo men were one of 73 other teams to be announced as a 2010 USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic Team, while the Lobo women made the list of 151 All-Academic teams. Individual awards were announced as well with eight men and eight women Lobos being honored.

The Lobo men's team was recognized as an All-Academic Team with a cumulative GPA of 3.19. National indoor mile champion and outdoor 1,500-meter All-American Lee Emanuel led the group of eight Lobo men named to the Individual All-Academic Team. Joining Emanuel were Chris Barnicle (indoor 5K All-American/outdoor 10K qualifier), David Bishop (outdoor 1,500m qualifier), Rory Fraser (indoor 3K All-American/outdoor 5K qualifier), Brock Hagerman (outdoor 5K and 10K qualifier), Thomas Trujillo (outdoor 4x100m Relay qualifier), Kyle Walker (outdoor pole vault qualifier) and Alex Willis (outdoor 3K steeplechase qualifier).

The Lobo women's team was credited with achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.35 to earn team honors. Outdoor triple jump All-American Deanna Young led the group of eight Lobo women. Joining Young with individual honors were Nicky Archer (outdoor 5K and 10K qualifier), Michelle Corrigan (outdoor 10K qualifier), Ashley Gibson (outdoor 1,500m and 5K qualifier), Janna Mitsos (outdoor 5K qualifier), Lacey Oeding (outdoor 10K qualifier), Briana Paxton (outdoor discus qualifier) and Ruth Senior (outdoor 3K steeplechase and 5K qualifier).

"This just shows that our athletes are making sure that school is first and foremost the reason they are at this University," Lobo head coach Joe Franklin said. "Our GPA is continually going up and we are definitely headed in the right direction. We are fortunate to have some very bright and talented student-athletes here at the University Of New Mexico."

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or participated in the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships (including preliminary rounds) in their respective event. Teams had to carry a team cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or better.
