FULLERTON, Calif. --- New Mexico (8-11) softball led No. 11 Arizona State (22-4) for most of the game Thursday but fell 6-3 in the opening round of the Judi Garman Classic. Lobo junior Katie Gilmore went 1-for-3 against the Sun Devils with two RBI. New Mexico outhit the defending national champs 10-9 but gave up back-to-back homers late. The Lobos will face No. 13 Arizona Friday at 12 p.m. MT.
New Mexico gave up two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Lobos wouldn't give up and rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth. Gilmore had a single to right field in the inning allowing two runners to score. Senior Analise Rubalcava was 2-for-4 in the game with an RBI.
New Mexico led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
The Sun Devils quickly regained the lead and cruised to a 6-3 win. ASU hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth inning. The first was a three-run blast and was followed by a solo homer.
