COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - The Lobo volleyball team (5-9, 1-2 MWC) needed only three games to notch its first Mountain West Conference victory of the 2006 season. The win ends a four-game losing streak for UNM and extends the Lobos win streak against the Falcons to five.
New Mexico held just a one point lead (6-5) in game one when the team banded together for a 9-2 run thanks to kills from five different Lobos. AFA pulled within three (14-17) but a kill and a block from freshman Anna Lehne led to a 4-0 UNM run and a 30-23 win.
Game two was tight, seeing 12 ties and 12 lead changes. Air Force looked like it was going to even the match at a game apiece with a 27-24 lead but a 5-0 spurt for the Lobos a 29-27 advantage. An attack error on UNM gave the Falcons a glimmer of hope but freshman Allison Suiter squashed it with a kill for the 30-28 victory.
UNM came out of the locker room energized to start game three. The Lobos defense was in charge, holding the Falcons to a -.064 hitting percentage (10K-13E-47TA). They used four runs, a 4-0, two 5-0 and one 7-0 stretch, respectively, to seal the match 30-18.
Sophomore Jeanne Fairchild posted a team-high 10 kills while freshman Rose Morris and Suiter recorded nine. Senior Kelly Therkelsen made her first appearance since spraining her ankle vs. Dartmouth on Sept. 9, tallying six kills. Sophomore Sarah Kwasigroch handed out a team-high 33 assists while classmate Gayle Tripp had a team-high 17 digs.
