Parkes Keep It Close Against 6th-ranked Agnostinelli, Loses in Round of 32

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - University of New Mexico senior Johnny Parkes kept pace with sixth-ranked Bruno Agnostinelli (Kentucky), but couldn't pull out the win, falling 7-5, 6-4, Thursday morning in the 2009 NCAA Men's Singles Round of 32. Parkes, the Mountain West Conference Player of the Year, finishes the season with a 30-5 overall mark. Agnostinelli improves to 36-13 this season.

Parkes and Agnostinelli, who was the overall fifth seed in the tournament, went back and forth throughout both sets. Parkes held the lead through the entire first set before dropping three games at the end. The senior from Southport Merseyside, England, took an immediate 1-0 and would hold five more leads, but Agnostinelli battled back at the end, breaking a 5-5 tie for the 7-5 win. The first set saw five ties.

The second set of the match looked much the same with four ties overall before Agnostinelli notched three straight games at the end for the victory, 6-4. Parkes held three leads including a 4-3 edge before Agnostinelli broke away for the win.
