SAN MARCOS, Texas --- New Mexico softball dropped a 4-3 decision to Texas State Friday at Bobcat Field. The Lobos committed three costly miscues and could not overcome a late rally by the Bobcats. UNM led for the majority of the game and finished with five hits. The Lobos fell to 15-11 overall while Texas State improved to 22-11.
The game started out as a pitcher's dual through the first three innings. Senior Kelly Ninemire cruised passed the Bobcats in the first three frames allowing a hit and striking out four.
New Mexico snapped the scoreless game in the fourth inning. The Lobos scored twice on two hits. Junior Samantha Hughes led off the inning with a walk and was followed by a Lindsey Elcess single to right. Hughes managed to advance to third on the play and later scored on a Gabriella Parra sacrifice fly to center. Sophomore Katie Gilmore plated Elcess on a run-scoring single up the middle. When the dust had settled, UNM had a 2-0 lead.
Texas State opened the sixth inning with a bunt single up the first base line by Kristine Tello. Tello was followed by a Ryan Kos walk to put two on and no outs. Ninemire got Alex Newton to pop out to Analise Rubalcava at third. Rubalcava tried to double-up Kos at first base and threw the ball down the right field line. Both runners advanced and eventually scored after right fielder Gabriella Parra overthrew second base. The final run for the Bobcats came on a throwing error by center fielder Hughes. Texas State rallied for four runs in the sixth and took a 4-2 lead.
The Lobos plated a run in the seventh on a run-scoring single by sophomore Erin Brandow. Brandow came through with a shot to left center scoring Gilmore. Gilmore finished the game going 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Despite the run, UNM dropped the game 4-3.
Ninemire took the loss after the fielding miscues and dropped to 10-8 overall. Ninemire threw 6.0 innings and gave up four runs on five hits.
Ragan Blake got the win after the late rally and moved to 10-8 on the season.
