LAS VEGAS, Nev.--The University of New Mexico women's soccer team defeated the UNLV Rebels 2-1 this afternoon. Senior Hannah Hand sent a header past the UNLV keeper in the 62nd minute to seal the win for the Lobos. The Lobos improve to 8-5-5 on the season and 3-3-1 in Mountain West Conference play. The Rebels drop to 11-6-2 on the season and 3-3-1 in MWC play.
"We've been playing really well," said head coach Kit Vela. "Alexis' first goal was brilliant. We knew in the second half that UNLV was going to throw everything at us. I'm really proud of the girls coming back, they just never let down and found a little more fire. The final goal by Hannah Hand was great."
In back and forth match the Lobos found two brilliant goals from leading scorers, sophomore Alexis Ball and the gamewinner from Hand. Ball picked up a free ball from a UNLV defender and ripped a shot from 30-yards out that sailed into the back of the net in the 34th minute. The goal was Ball's sixth on the season equaling her total from last year as a freshman.
With the score tied at 1-1, Hand picked up a cross from freshman Jennifer Williams and headed the ball into the back of the net. The goal was Hands' third on the season.
The Lobos are now 6-0 when leading at halftime.
The Lobos held the Rebels to 12 shots in the match and seven shots on goal. Senior Shannon Adragna made five saves and picked up her eighth win of the season. Adragna was all over the box and constantly thwarted the UNLV attack.
The win ended a five match losing streak to the Rebels and secured the Lobos a spot in the six-team MWC Tournament. The last time the Lobos defeated the Rebels was in Oct. 24, 2003 in a 1-0 overtime victory. The MWC will take place on Nov. 5-8. For more information visit www.GoLobos.com.
