ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The University of New Mexico softball team falls 9-1 in five innings to Utah, Saturday afternoon at Lobo Field. Catcher Jessica Garcia led the Lobos at the plate going 2-for-2 and caught two runners stealing. New Mexico will return to action on Tuesday in a rematch against Rio Grande Rival New Mexico State at 6 p.m. MT at Lobo Field. Utah went up 1-0 in the top of the second off of a double and a single. The Utes scored six more runs in the third to go up 7-0. Whitney Holm hit a three-run home run to score the first three runs in the third. With bases loaded Kara Foster got hit by a pitch to walk in another run for Utah. The Utes scored their final two runs of the inning on an error and a single.
The Lobos got their first run of the game in the bottom of the third. Crisitn Anderson led off the inning with a walk. With two outs, Erin Brandow singled to left field to advance Anderson to third. Cassandra Kalapsa singled down the left line to score Anderson to make the score 7-1.
Utah scored two more runs in the fifth to end the game in five innings, 9-1. The Utes were led at the plate by Holm going 3-for-3 with two runs, a double, and a triple. Kelsi Foster went 1-for-2 on a home run with three RBIs and two runs. Ashley Smuda (16-10) received the win in the circle with five strikeouts and helped her team improve to 19-21 and 2-3 in the Mountain West Conference.
Anderson had two walks and a run for the Lobos. Kalapsa went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Brandow went 2-for-3 on the day. Kaela DeBroeck received the loss for the Lobos and is now 5-12.
