ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Cherry team swept past the Silver in three games, 30-28, 30-24, 30-26, in the annual "Cherry & Silver" volleyball match Saturday afternoon (Aug. 23) at the South Gym of the Johnson Center. Senior Anna Reines (Big Lake, Minn.) led all players with 15 kills as she hit .345 for the match, including two blocks and two service aces. Several players played for both squads, including setters Monica Meihack (Fallon, Nev.) and Lindsay Smith (Bakersfield, Calif.), who totaled 33 and 20 assists, respectively.
Sophomore Chelsea Sondrup (Lindon, Utah), who set the single-season block assist record at UNM last season, collected three blocks to go along with a match-high 14 digs and seven kills. Freshman Megan Morris (Los Fresnos, Texas) led all players with six blocks.
Freshman Jessica Jensen led the Silver team with eight kills, while fellow freshman Brandy Atwater (Folsom, N.M.) added seven. Freshman Jennifer Heasty (Westminster, Colo.), who played for the Cherry team, also had an impressive performance by hitting for a .294 attack percentage with nine kills, five digs and two service aces.
New Mexico opens the season next weekend (Aug. 29-30) at the Fresno State Invitational. The Lobos' first match is against host Fresno State Friday, Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. PT. On Saturday, UNM plays Cal Poly at noon PT and Idaho State at 5 p.m. PT.
