ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - In its final test before regular season, the New Mexico women's basketball team needed overtime to down the Houston Flight, 78-76, at The Pit Saturday night in front of 9,294.
Junior Mandi Moore stepped to the line with three seconds remaining in overtime after a foul from Houston's Petra Ujhelyi. Moore knocked down both free throws to give the Lobos the lead. Houston's Jamie Redd just missed a game-winning three pointer from the perimeter as it rolled in and out, sealing the New Mexico win.
The Lobos opened up a 44-27 lead at half time behind a 16-2 run capped off by a Moore three pointer. Moore dominated the first half, scoring 17 of her 19 points and going 5-5 from behind the arc. UNM shot 43.6 percent from the field to the Flight's 35.5 percent.
The Flight took off in the second half with a 22-10 run that pushed the game into overtime. Houston was on fire from the field in the second half shooting 51.7 percent from the field and 60 percent from beyond the arc. Alissa Murphy scored 22 of her game-high 27 points in the second half. Teammate Jamie Redd also scored 13 of her 21 points.
The Lobos tip off the 2003-04 regular season on Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. when they host Southern California.
