WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- The New Mexico softball team split in a pair of games Friday afternoon on the first day of the 2007 Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech. The Lobos opened the tournament with a 12-8 victory over Lipscomb but fell to the 21st-ranked Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, 11-3, in the second game. UNM scored 15 runs in two games recording 16 hits. The Lobos move to 2-5 on the year and are scheduled to continue the classic on Saturday.
New Mexico dominated game one early scoring 10 runs in the first three innings. The Lobos plated a run in the home half of the first, three in the second and a six spot in the third. Senior Amy Ray belted her first home run of the year in the third inning down the left field line to help lift the Lobos. Ray managed to go 1-for-4 in the game with a run and three RBI. UNM had nine different players collect a hit including freshman Katie Gilmore. Gilmore had two RBI and a run scored while going 2-for-3 at the plate. Senior Becky Dover had a big game going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Lipscomb started to climb back into the game in the third inning after they scored two runs. Everything remained in the Lobos favor until they gave up two more runs in the fifth and a grand slam in the sixth. Despite the late rally, UNM managed to seal the victory.
Freshman Tori Rogers was the pitcher of record and improved to 1-1 with the victory. Rogers went 1.2 innings allowing two runs on three hits. Senior Caley Peterson started the game in the circle and pitched a combined four innings. Junior Kelly Ninemire pitched the final 1.1 innings to close out the game.
UNM battled the nationally-ranked Yellow Jackets in game two. The Lobos were aggressive and forced the action early against Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets scored three runs in the opening frame but UNM responded with a run in the second and two in the third to pull within a run at 4-3. The game would go back and forth until the bottom of the fifth, when GT plated three runs and three hits. The Lobos trailed 7-2 heading into the home half of the sixth, before the Yellow Jackets scored four more runs to reach the run-rule limit. UNM had three runs on four hits in the game and committed an error. GT collected 14 hits and scored 11 times.
Gilmore blasted a solo shot in the second inning of the game to keep the Lobos close. In the game, Gilmore went 1-for-2 with a run and RBI. Ninemire (1-2) took the loss after going four innings giving up seven runs on 10 hits.
UNM continues the Buzz Classic Saturday against Centenary College and Indiana State. The Lobos play Centenary at 5 p.m. followed by the Sycamores at 7 p.m. Live stats of the games is available through www.GoLobos.com.
