The University of New Mexico men's soccer team lost to No. 18 Portland on Sunday, 2-1, in the final game of the TLC Plumbing, Heating & Cooling Invitational.
The Lobos are now 2-1-1 on the season.
Portland tied the game a few minutes later at 54:33 when Pilot Jarad vanSchaik struck from the top of the goalie box.
The score remained 1-1 until late in the half when Portland's Ryan Kawulok picked up a rebound and netted the final goal of the game at 88:46.
The Lobos had 17 shots to the Pilots' four. UNM keeper Justin Holmes had one save.
Lobo head coach Jeremy Fishbein says Sunday's game was "eerily reminiscent" of the last time UNM faced Portland in the first round of the 2009 NCAA tournament.
"We created a lot of chances," he said. "Maybe we didn't play with the urgency we needed to the first half. There was a lot of good soccer and we didn't put it away."
The Lobos are back in action on Sept. 17 and Sept. 19 as they host the Lobo Classic at the UNM Soccer Complex. The Lobos face Buffalo at 7 p.m. on Friday and No. 6 Harvard at noon on Sunday.
