ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico men's tennis student-athlete Johnny Parkes becomes the third Lobo to be named Mountain West Conference Men's Tennis Player of The Week.
The junior improved to 16-8 on the singles court with two victories last weekend. One of his wins came against No. 119 Marek Sramek from South Alabama, 6-2, 6-4. Against Texas A&M- Corpus Christi's Mikhail Pavlov, Parkes collected a 7-6, 6-3 victory.
On the doubles court, Johnny Parkes connected with his brother Chris Parkes for three wins. In the Old Dominion match, the Parkes brothers beat Rodrigo Souza and Tobias Fanselow 8-3 at No. 2 on Thursday. On Friday, the pair defeated Sramek and Robert Hodel, 8-5, from South Alabama. Then they collected their seventh straight win against James Langford and Laurent Montoisy, 8-6, from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday.
Johnny Parkes earned his first career MWC player of the week honors and becomes the third Lobo this season to collect such honors. Max Jones was named player of the week by the MWC on Jan. 30. Graeme Kassautzki earned the same honors on March 6.
The Lobos take the week off before beginning MWC action at home against Utah, Air Force and San Diego State on consecutive dates starting April 4.
