HENDERSON, Nev. -- The sixth-ranked New Mexico women's golf team took a five-stroke lead after round one of the Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Showdown Monday afternoon (Nov. 10) at the 6,194-yard Anthem Country Club. The Lobos shot even par as a team (288) at the par-72 course, five shots ahead of No. 11 Oklahoma. New Mexico is looking to repeat as champions of the tournament after winning the team title in 2002.
Individually, senior Katrina Leckovic (Burnaby, British Columbia) tied her season-best round with a 3-under 69 to lead the Lobos and only trails Colorado State's Trisha Quick (4-under 68) by one stroke for the overall lead. Leckovic shot seven pars for the afternoon.
Junior Shannon Johnson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) carded an even-par 72 to stand in a tie for fifth place after day one. Freshman Ashley Rollins (Austin, Texas) shot a steady 1-over 73 and is in tie for eighth place, while sophomore Christine Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) fired a 2-over 74 and is in tie for 12th. Junior Kailin Downs (Bend, Ore.) is currently in a tie for 36th place (6-over 78).
The Las Vegas Founders Women's Collegiate Showdown will continue tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov. 11) with the final round set for Wednesday, Nov. 12.
